History in Avendar

The Sundering's great destruction was followed by the long slumber of Jolinn. During this absence, the young life he so cherished continued to live on. The transformative power of the separation of magic created new permutations, populating the dense forests, plains, and marshes with new and unimagined creatures. From the earth and grass were born the ethron, a race of hardy, green-skinned sapients. This early incarnation was less animal than plant; less humanoid than golemic. It was they who attracted the attention of a new goddess, who appeared to them in their tranquil forest home. She guided and shaped them, plying their infant race with a sculptor's touch. In time they would grow beautiful, wise and strong, mirroring the image of their deific mother. It was She who gave them language, and they named Her Elar, All-Mother.

In the age that followed, Elar encouraged further growth in Her blessed children. Their affinity for nature was undeniable, and it was through this that She nurtured a spark of magic. Elemental magic was not yet realized by the young races of Avendar; thus, this first glimmer did not tap into the powerful depths that would shape so many future ages. Instead, it touched upon the life of the forests to which the ethron were so attuned. She imbued an ancient tree, in whose shade She found the first of their race, with Her divine power. She called this tree Firiel, the Tree of Life, and to it all forests were bound. This, She felt, would allow Her children to always find Her, and to populate the distant lands of the Prime without fear.

Unlike most races, the terror of the War of Fire largely left the ethron unscathed. As the srryn and the nefortu laid waste to great swaths of Avendar, Elar provided refuge and comfort to Her children. They moved easily between Firiel and the far reaches of the forest, avoiding much of the bloodshed, hatred, and destruction that so many suffered. With the War's end, the ethron were sought by human and aelin empires. Their growing reputation for the command of nature offered a way to renew many savaged lands to fertility. Elar encouraged Her children to restore the wartorn earth, and they traveled to the farthest reaches of the known world. One of Her chosen, a powerful druid named Eqiril, came to the fallen human kingdom of Caal. Over many lifetimes, she saw the rise of a great forest where the empire once stood. This place would become known as Qilarn, a permanent stronghold of the ethron race.

The worship of Elar was overshadowed by the growing power of other gods and goddesses. The veneration of the Overgods, as well as the famous exploits of demigods such as Marlax, drew the attention of most of Avendar's sapients. As ethron societies became less insular, so spread their beliefs; however, this process was cut short by the coming of the War of Night. The dread power of the shuddeni, and their glorious defeat at the hands of Rystaia Lightbringer, captured the global imagination. In the modern era, Elar's worship has spread more substantially than ever. The growth of ethron involvement in world affairs, as well as the inclusion of new races into the druidic order, has given Her a foothold in many hearts. The blessings of the All-Mother wait for those who would sense Her great love, and defend the treasures of the wild.
