History in Avendar
With the migration of the majority of the caladaran from the ancient glades of the Rirro Jagka, they quickly came into contact with the major civilizations of the Prime. This fertile intellectual exchange helped encourage the rise of the Earendamian Republic, ushering in the classical Golden Age. However, for older caladaran, this time was as frustrating as it was illuminating. Knowledge of magic and its diversity challenged long-held assumptions of the nature of mortality; war-like races and their martial philosophies clashed with their basic pacifism; and the seemingly neverending multiplicity of animals, plants, and climates uprooted older notions of the Prime itself. Change, it seemed, had become the race's only constant.
Most disconcertingly, the ancient worship of the caladaran gods began to change. The Seer's devoted increasingly divorced themselves from the monastic traditions of old, favoring instead the renown of city scholarship. As well, the Arbiter's chosen increasingly accepted the notion of war, even going so far as to acknowledge it as a path to enlightenment. The most conservative caladaran balked at these evolutions, and questioned the survival of their heritage. They longed for an affirmation of their ancient beliefs, and began to seek new divine attention to preserve and restore their people. They grew distant from their Chadralnite and Jalassan cousins, many deigning to stay within or return to the increasingly dangerous Rirro Jagka.
This caladaran splinter suffered immensely at the hands of the alatharya, the kankoran, and the srryn. Many of their number were slain, and many of their records and settlements were destroyed. Vulnerable and battered, the sages encountered the hereto-unknown power of a new deity. They named this deity Alajial, and their fragmented histories describe Her as the divine child of Chadraln and Jalassa. According to legend, Her influence was first felt in the sudden spring of lilies amidst the muddy earth of the Rirro Jagka. Where these flowers grew, an aura of peace pervaded; here, they found solace from the aggression which had so plagued them. Optimism became a staple among these early Alajians, and the lily became the sign of their goddess' divine charity. This positivity eventually led them to send missionaries to the outside world.
The War of Night offered these missionaries both a significant challenge and a grand opportunity. As cities fell and armies clashed throughout the known world, Her message of peace and comfort seemed like an impossible dream. Yet, at the same time, it spoke to the needs of those tormented by the horrors of the shuddeni. Caladaran sages bandaged the wounded and cared for the sick, but possessed an unprecedented ability to soothe the tortured mind. Alajial's historians argue that it was She who first taught that Spirit magic could heal the mind, before the revelation of Rystaia Lightbringer and her ch'taren. Regardless of if this is the case, there is little doubt that Alajial's chosen were among the first to explore the sphere after the War.
In time, Alajian scholars would grow in prominence because of their guiding role in the development of the Spirit school. This position gave them immense credibility, not only with the other mortal races, but within the other caladaran traditions. The ensuing dialog allowed renewed interplay between the vast diversity of isolated caladaran philosophies. In the modern era, Alajial has taken Her place as the third in the caladaran trinity. Her benevolence and forgiveness grant solace to those who toil in dark times, and guide those who place others before themselves.
