As a mortal, Caine was unparalleled in both his mastery of the sword and the strength of his ego. His meteoric rise through the ranks drew the attention of the Gods, who followed his activities with an ever watchful eye. Despite their attention, he allied himself with none, although there are rumors of brief flirtation with a Goddess of the Dark.

Dissatisfied with the mere distinction of "Hero," he sought an audience with the Dragon of the Void, demanding admittance to the ranks of the Immortals. For reasons known only to him, Ashur granted this most unusual of requests, granting Caine power equal to Sitheus over the Raider House.

But the Unholiest of Blades could not be satiated with such meager power. Impatience grew within him, fueling him to continue the search for power. Prowling through the Demesnes of the Gods, he came upon the ancient shuddeni entity Arhakhla, a collective consisting of the spirits of Power, Greed, Hatred, and Pain. In a rash attempt to wrest power from the Arhakhla's control, the two entities energy sources were merged, forming Arkhural, the Twilight Lord.

Arkhural now sits upon his onyx throne, his immortal gaze focused upon the turning of the mortal world. Occasionally deigning to step into mortal affairs, he has cultivated a small group of devoted followers, the Sect of the Shijardu. According to popular belief, the night sky becomes rent with streaks of blood in the presence of the Darkhearted.
