Overview

The Chanisal Monastery is a small sanctuary and settlement to the south of Var Bandor and to the northwest of Eril Village. Its origins lie in the struggles of the War of Night-- specifically, the occupation of Var Bandor by the shuddeni Arhakhla. After the Day of Liberation, the city was effectively a ruin: its citizens killed, enslaved, or displaced; its walls battered; and its guards and governmental structure obliterated. In addition to the damage to the city itself, the Arhakhla attacked other nearby locations, including the forest of Nendor, the forest of Qilarn, and the Tower of Aramril. With the exception of Qilarn, the damage ranged from extensive to crippling.

In the wake of the War, the provisional government of Var Bandor made the calculated decision to move the most injured and traumatized of their remaining citizens away from the rebuilding process. A tract of torched land was granted to one of Alajial's followings: the Lijenin Order. Founded by Lijeni Ichata, a caladaran psionicist, the Order's purpose was to shelter the lost and cure the afflicted. They were granted this plot in perpetuity, in part because of its perceived worthlessness, and in part because the reconstruction and rehabilitation periods were expected to take years, if not decades. Ichada and his Order accepted this arrangement as a concession to their abilities and ideals.

However, there was another group which wanted to settle in the same space: a clan of ethron descended from Qali the Wildheart. Clan Qali was outnumbered by, and eventually alienated from, the Nendorin Order due to the steadily growing influx of human Lilunite druids. The Lijenin Order lacked the ability to restore the forest, as they did not possess druidic power; and the Qali did not possess the skills or license to defend any home in the forest from other groups. Due to happenstance-- or perhaps, divine intervention from Alajial-- clan Qali's origin myth was compatible with partnership with the caladaran. Conversely, the caladaran monks found the generally pacific and benevolent bent of the Qali to be compatible with their religious ideals.

Together, the two groups underwent a symbiosis, providing a place for Qali druids to preserve and hone their skills with mystical druidic runes, and for the monks to practice and promote their brand of psionics and Spirit magic. Their actions created a fertile ground for other refugees from the War to come to, ultimately leading to the construction of Eril Village. Meanwhile, Var Bandor has been a reluctant and difficult neighbor-- simultaneously appreciating the easy removal of dangerous people from within their city, but also coveting the large and now-valuable tract of land the monastery is built on for future development. This has led their relationship to be tenuous at best, creating some animosity toward them by the Var Bandor Merchant Council.

Notable NPCs

These NPCs are important characters in the monastery, and may be involved in quests, guilds, or hold powerful items that PCs may want to obtain. This section will review each of these mobs and describe their mechanical role and any pertinent fight details or items. The roles of these NPCs can be understood by reading their descriptions, or reading lore on the items they carry.

Eliqali

Eliqali is ethron (brown), and is the monastery's most powerful druid. Other druids who live on monastery grounds are under her supervision. She is a Firiel-themed druid and behaves like one in combat. Her special items are rot_death, as they are created by a spell players do not have access to at this time.

Taqashe

Taqashe is ethron (green), and is both a guildmaster and storymaster for monastery children. Her stories are primarily oral history connected to clan Qali, although she covers other topics such as magic or the Lijenin Order. She is an Earth/Spirit scholar and behaves as one in combat. She carries no special items.

Kisjam

Kisjam is caladaran, and is the primary master of the Lijenin Order. He is a branded follower of Alajial (tier 2). He trains all psionicists on the monastery grounds, and also adventurers who live in Var Bandor. He is, therefore, also a psionicist, and behaves as one in combat. He has the following special item:

  • a crooked oak staff

Dejanech

Dejanech is caladaran, and is also a master of the Lijenin Order. He is the historian for the area as well as of Alajian groups or notable figures from all areas and time frames. He is a bard and behaves as one in combat. He has the following special item:

  • a modest silver flute

Dachati

Dachati is caladaran, and is the final master of the Lijenin Order. She is the Order's spiritmaster and therefore trains all spirit scholars who live on monastery grounds. She is a Silver Light-themed guildmaster for adventurers and behaves as one in combat. She carries no special items.

Lirannen

Lirannen is human, and while not a master of the Lijenin Order, is a trusted politican advisor and friend to Dejanech and Kisjam. He also maintains the monastery ward and looks after patients who have come to the monastery for help. He is a Water/Earth scholar and behaves as one in combat. He carries no special items.

Tselak

Tselak is nefortu, and a permanent guest on monastery grounds. He is not directly affiliated with any faction and acts as the monastery's live-in chef. He directs adventurers and Ireqa in food preparation and delivery. He has no class and thus his combat potential is minimal. He carries no special items.

Valowei

Valowei is ethron (brown) and a member of clan Qali. She acts as the monastery's tailor/seamstress. She is a young teenager and has never left monastery grounds. Because of her youth, she has no class skills and is particularly low level. She carries no special items.

Ireqa

Ireqa is ethron (brown) and also a member of clan Qali. She works in the monastery kitchen as an assistant to Tselak. Her interest in cooking suggests that one day she will be a chef herself. Because of her youth, she has no class skills and is particularly low level. She carries no special items.

Qeton

Qeton is ethron (green) and a charge of the Lijenin Order. He is supposed to do chores on monastery grounds, but he frequently ends up pretending to work and then napping in places he thinks he will not be noticed. Because of his youth, he has no class skills and is particularly low level. He has the following special items:

  • a pair of thick-rimmed spectacles
  • a sturdy oak broom

Other Features

There are miscellaneous features of the monastery which don't fall into any of the prior categories.

Taqashe's story time

Taqashe tells a story to monastery children every day at 4pm. They congregate around her and listen, and when her story is finished, they return to their more or less normal positions to roam and play. Adding new stories is fairly simple given how her story list is programmed.

Dejanech's conversation topics

When a PC sits near Dejanech, he becomes available to respond to keywords relating to Alajial, Alajian figures, and factions. He has a huge list of topics he will talk about, which is similarly extensible in the same way Taqashe is.

A silver lily pendant

This pendant reacts to areas significant to Alajial and grants small spell buffs to the wearer when they visit them. One of them is the living Alajial sculpture at the heart of the sanctuary, but two other ones can be found-- one at the shrine to Alajial in the Lithling Freehold, and one in the square in Jandiska.

A steel and crystal ring

Taqashe sells a ring which creates a charmie when activated. If the ring is dropped on the ground, it turns into an animate a steel and crystal butterfly which is under the command of the person who dropped it. If this charmie is killed or the command phrase is spoken, it returns to ring form.

Founts

A permanent fount of positive energy and neutral ethos is present at the Heart of the Sanctuary. A second, less likely fount can appear on top of the statue of Lijeni Ichada.

Prowling cat

A tabby cat lives near the monastery dry storage and basement, and has many adorable behaviors.
