For the common stone types,
- mountainous / deep underground - mostly granite
- Earendam and Arid Waste regions - mostly sandstone
- River valley / swamp / Nendor - mostly shale
- volcanic/igneous - mostly obsidian
- marble occasionally instead of (most visibly layered with) any of these, for variation
For semi-precious gems, there are 5-10 locations, mostly underground. Some are in more remote and dangerous locations, and others are easily accessible.
